Grimes School holds the top ENL classroom in Mount Vernon in the Learning A-Z Reading Challenge

Scholars of Mrs. Joycelyn Alfreida Rios' class at Grimes School were smiling ear to ear with prizes, treats and personal awards after being recognized for reading the most books in the Learning A-Z Challenge on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. 

Mrs. Rios’ class read an impressive 719 books during the challenge. Earlier in the school year, Learning A-Z launched a reading book challenge for those who are learning English as a new language to encourage them to read more. 

“The Learning A-Z Program is a fun, interactive curriculum in which the students love to learn from,” said Mrs. Rios. “Teaching the students from this curriculum Monday-Friday, during the Early morning Academy and Saturday Academy has been very beneficial! The proof is in the results!”

Grimes School ENL Class celebrates the holidays with Great Grandma Read-Aloud, Author Visit and Festive Fun

On Thursday, December 19, 2024, students in Jocelyn Rios’ English as a New Language (ENL) class at Grimes School were treated to a Great Grandma Christmas Read-Aloud party, where they enjoyed all sorts of Christmas festivities. Whilst enjoying snacks, pastries, and refreshments provided by the parents, students listened to a live reading of Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” read aloud by Mrs. Rios’ mother, a long-time resident of Mount Vernon.

Grimes celbrates Hispanic Heritage with living wax museum

English as a New Language (ENL) students at Grimes School confidently performed historical figures of Hispanic Heritage amongst all of their school peers and community. Each grade was invited to participate in the “Believe that the Impossible is Possible! Living Wax Museum and Dance Hall” from December 4 through December 6, and learn about notable Latin names such as Ellen Ochoa, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and Santana.

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Grimes School held a virtual viewing of “Believe that the Impossible is Possible! Living Wax Museum and Dance Hall” to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and prolific figures in the Latin community. This virtual performance is the first installment of a three-day series. Parents are invited to watch grades K-5 perform on December 5 at 9 a.m. and grades 6-8 perform on December 6 at 9 a.m. in the auditorium and cafeteria.

Mikes Tire and Auto Repair Shop - Grimes

Grimes School recently accepted a donation from Mike and Rebekah Garabito of Mike's Tire & Auto Repair Shop. The donation is a symbol of shared community between the school and the neighborhood, as the shop is right across the street from Grimes. The funding will be used for a variety of events, and staff at Grimes expressed appreciation for the donation wholeheartedly.

On Monday, November 4, 2024, the Music Team, a technology-based music program that offers instruction in music production, DJing and song recording, conducted an assembly for Grimes School students. Marc and Dayne from the Music Team led the assembly that focused on the fundamental skills of a modern DJ (disc jockey) and exposed Grimes students to the technology that DJs use to play music. The assembly also highlighted that becoming a DJ can be a lucrative profession.

Carmelle Terriblé's fifth-grade class at Grimes School enthusiastically celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by selecting a notable Hispanic figure or country to research. The students put in great effort, diving deep to find valuable and relevant information for their projects. They then curated engaging and detailed PowerPoint presentations, showcasing their findings to an audience that included their parents, principal, and teachers. The presentations highlighted their hard work, creativity, and newfound appreciation for Hispanic culture and heritage.

Teachers at Grimes School gathered in a classroom for an early morning professional development session on data-based decision making on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Teachers received a presentation from representatives from the Lower Hudson Regional Partnership Center of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), with an emphasis on special education. They were introduced to the data-management processes they will utilize during the school year.
