Grimes School holds Harlem Rennaisance Black History Month event

Scholars at Grimes School traveled back in history to the Harlem Renaissance during their Black History Month event on Friday, March 3, 2023.  The audience and performers honored the artists of the Harlem Renaissance, who positively changed the way the world viewed African Americans and greatly influenced culture.

The main themes of the writings during that time were about racial identity, equality, black life in the South and North, and other racial issues.  A few students and teachers recited poems written by Langston Hughes. They also sang and danced to "A Tisket a Tasket" by Ella Fitzgerald and "It Don't Mean a Thing" by Duke Ellington. Jacob Lawrence, Selma Burke and Laura Wheeler-Waring were also acknowledged.

To close the show, the students and several teachers recited a chant: "Rosa sat so Martin could march; Martin marched so Obama could run; Obama ran so our children could fly.”

Scholars at the event recognized the importance of those who came before them, showing tribute and appreciation for their experiences and the hope they provided.
