Grimes School accepts donation from Mike's Tire & Auto Repair Shop in Mount Vernon
Grimes School recently accepted a donation from Mike and Rebekah Garabito of Mike's Tire & Auto Repair Shop. The donation is a symbol of shared community between the school and the neighborhood, as the shop is right across the street from Grimes. The funding will be used for a variety of events, and staff at Grimes expressed appreciation for the donation wholeheartedly.
Eighth-graders at Grimes School learned a valuable lesson about making good choices as well as how to write effectively in a final essay project about a book by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore in which he compared his life and that of an incarcerated man with the same name.
Grimes School hosted a tour on Tuesday morning for families of new students in grades K-6, who are transferring to the school due to the building reorganization.
This spring the English as a New Language (ENL) Department at Grimes School hosted the ENL Grimes Film Festival. This fundraiser was created to raise money for their June trips to Muscoot Farm and the Mount Vernon Public Library. “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Wicked” were the featured films. The ENL Department reached their goal of $1,800 due to ticket sales, ENL student contributions, and donations from small business owners in Westchester County, New York City, and even London, England!
Scholars at Grimes School were treated to a video game truck to commemorate the ending of one of their mentoring programs, Project RISE on Friday, May 23. Project RISE aims to foster young people's mental health and empower them by providing a secure environment for them to heal and form healthy relationships with their peers and loved ones. The program also encourages youth to explore their voice as they start to develop personal life paths.
Grimes School recently held a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Ceremony and Poetry Contest, which celebrated students’ achievement.
Grimes School celebrated Read Across America Week by sharing the #1 New York Times bestselling picture book, "The Smart Cookie" by Jory John and Pete Oswald. The book helped teach the universal message of self-worth and the willingness to grow.
Scholars at Grimes School performed flips and tricks across the stage as the crowd went wild for their performances in honor of Black History Month on Friday, March 7, 2025. Families and students gathered in the auditorium to watch their loved ones showcase their talents on stage.
“Online safety must be emphasized,” repeated the crowd in unison as Andrea Thomas, Principal of Denzel Washington School of the Arts, presented information on cell phone and internet safety. On Monday, March 10, 2025, the Grimes School Parent Teacher Association gave an engaging presentation to parents and students on cell phone readiness and handed out free laptops provided by AT&T to each parent in attendance.
