Grimes families relax, recharge during breathe & bond event

Grimes Elementary School recently hosted Breathe & Bond, a Title I Family Engagement Experience focused on wellness, mindfulness and meaningful family connections. Families enjoyed a relaxing atmosphere while participating in activities designed to promote conversation, self-care and emotional well-being.

A special highlight of the event was a sound bowl meditation experience led by Khay Kare, who introduced families to calming mindfulness practices and the benefits of relaxation. Families also created their own bath salt bombs, learning about different scents and how aromatherapy can support relaxation, stress relief and overall wellness.

Parents and children engaged in guided conversations, shared experiences and quality time together, strengthening family bonds in a peaceful and welcoming environment. The event provided families with practical wellness tools they can continue to use at home while reinforcing the importance of taking time to connect, reflect and care for one another.

The Grimes School community recently united in an extraordinary show of compassion and support for beloved sixth-grade teacher Dana Johnson, who experienced a devastating apartment fire in Yonkers on April 28, 2026. In an instant, Ms. Johnson lost the place she called home along with many of her personal belongings and essentials.
In response, the Grimes Sunshine Committee, led by Mrs. Joycelyn Alfreda Rios, organized Hearts in Action: The Grimes Movement, a heartfelt schoolwide initiative centered on unity, kindness, and community support.

Congratulations to Franyel Rosario, a fourth-grade student at Grimes School, for being named April's Grimes Student of the Month! He has shown tremendous progress in both academics and behavior. Franyel continues to work hard each day, demonstrates a positive attitude toward learning, and has made meaningful improvements in the classroom. We are proud of his growth and accomplishments. Keep up the great work, Franyel!

Sixth-graders in Tameka Cooper’s class at Grimes School were still researching, debating and buying stocks Friday as the Mount Vernon City School District’s CTE Stock Market Challenge entered its final stretch. Though Grimes was not among the top three schools on the latest leaderboard, Ms. Cooper cheered her students on, reminding them that with one week left in the three-month competition, a late rally is still possible for a chance at a trophy, bragging rights and a pizza party.

Thank you to the students, families and staff who made Grimes School’s Rhythm & Soul Dance on March 27 a night to remember. The music, the moves and the laughter filled the room with energy and showcased the true spirit of our school community. We appreciate your continued support in making events like this so special.
