The Mount Vernon City School District’s 2023-2024 graduation rate climbed to a level not seen in more than two decades. The projected graduation rate – 79.9% – increased 5.6 percentage points over the previous year. The District utilized data to provide feedback for targeted progress monitoring and intervention to make this increase possible. Targeted monitoring and intervention also allowed faculty and staff to foster a connection with students to help them succeed.

The Mount Vernon City School District conducted air quality tests throughout the Graham School building on Thursday, September 19, 2024. The tests confirmed that the air quality is safe for students and staff and is well below the permissible exposure limits outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Mount Vernon High School Assistant Principal Erica Naughton graduated from MVHS in 1998 and soon after began teaching within the Mount Vernon City School District. She has dedicated her career to educating in the District she grew up in and has committed her time and passion to Mount Vernon students. She also serves as the varsity girls basketball coach, giving her even more time to impact her students.

On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, parents attended Coffee & Tea With the Principal, a meet-and-greet event, held by Grimes School. Coffee, bagels and other breakfast delights were served as parents filed into the school’s auditorium, getting a chance to mingle and settle in before the event started. The goal of this meet-and-greet was to have an honest discussion and set boundaries with technology, as Grimes is moving towards becoming a phone-free school.
Scholars from various elementary schools across the Mount Vernon City School District strolled into their respective schools on Thursday, September 19, 2024, holding the hands of their father, grandfather, or father figure. The City of Mount Vernon will hold its third annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 1 to 7 p.m. on the Howard Street Playground between North Terrace Avenue and West Lincoln Avenue. The rain date will be Sunday, September 29. There will be music, food trucks and vendors at the celebration.
Parents filed into the auditorium at Rebecca Turner Academy to meet Special Education Department staff, Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) staff, and hear more about how the Mount Vernon City School District can support their children’s success. Parents also learned about different resources they can use at the meet-and-greet, which was held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
